The Dragon Gate

There’s an old story that follows koi everywhere they go. Swim far enough up the river, leap the falls at the Dragon Gate, and the fish becomes a dragon.

It’s why koi are almost always painted climbing water — never still. And it’s why we’ve never built a pond without giving the water somewhere to fall from. The falls aren’t the decoration on top of the pond. They’re the reason the whole thing works: moving water, aerated water, water with somewhere to go.

Every build we do has a climb in it somewhere. A two-foot cascade off a patio. Sixteen feet of stream through a side yard. A sheer drop you can hear from the back door.

The old fish who builds them, we call the Pondwright.

Our Process

How we design, build, and maintain your oasis

The pond is a living system — circulation, filtration, rock, gravel, plants, and fish in balance — so it stays clear with almost no chemicals. We place what you look at where you actually sit, and we build shelves you can plant, stand on, and maintain.

Ecosystem approach

Circulation, filtration, rocks, gravel, plants, and fish work together so the pond maintains itself. Minimal chemicals. Water you can watch koi swim through.

Viewing and placement

The BioFalls, the main waterfall, and the open water face the patio, the porch, or the window you live at — not the back fence.

Shelves and terracing

Built-in ledges for safety, easy maintenance, and aquatic plants. You can step in, work the edge, and still have a pond that looks like nature set it.

The installation

From the first mark to living water

01

Layout and shape

We outline the pond and stream with marking paint or a hose until the shape sits right in the yard.

02

Filter positioning

Skimmer and biological filter (BioFalls) go at opposite ends so water travels the full length of the feature.

03

Excavation

We dig the basin with stepped shelves and clean, straight-edge walls — the bones of the ecosystem.

04

Underlayment and liner

Protective geotextile first, then a flexible rubber liner. This is the watertight shell everything else sits on.

05

Plumbing

On most ponds the pump sits in the skimmer, with flexible PVC to the BioFalls, laid and buried so you never see a pipe. Swim ponds and rec ponds use an external pump instead.

06

Rock and gravel

Washed base rock, boulders, and river gravel along the basin and edges, set by hand over the liner.

07

Waterfall construction

Feature rocks and waterfall foam frame the main fall and tell the water exactly where to go.

08

Edge finishing

Excess liner is trimmed and folded above the water line, then backfilled with soil and decorative gravel.

09

Landscaping and startup

Marginal plants, fill, and beneficial bacteria to jump-start the ecosystem. Then it starts to live.

Under the stone

The system that keeps it clear

AquaBlox intake bay set into the pond
AquaBlox intake bay on the liner before rock

The intake bayAn AquaBlox intake bay — a high-volume, low-clog intake built into the pond and buried under stone. It pulls water evenly so the system runs quiet and clean. Most of our ponds use an internal pump in the skimmer. Swim ponds and rec ponds use an external pump. UV is an optional add-on, quoted separately — it is not in the regular price and is not always needed. You never see the machinery; you just see the result.

Constructed gravel wetland bog filter with Snorkel vault

Inside the wetland filter

A constructed gravel wetland does the heavy lifting — biological filtration that keeps the water clear the way nature does. Here’s what’s working under the plants.

  • 1Snorkel® VaultCentral access point for cleaning and maintaining the wetland filter.
  • 2Snorkel Vault LidProtects the vault from debris and stands up to foot traffic.
  • 3Centipede® ModulesDistribute water evenly through the filter bed for maximum contact with the media.
  • 4AquaBlox® Water StorageA settlement chamber — solids drop out before the water rises through the media.
  • 5FilterBlox™ ModulesBiological filter tubes that maximize surface area and filtration capacity.
  • 6Centipede End CapA clean connection point for the incoming plumbing.

Questions & Answers

Have questions? We have answers.

What makes Carolina Water Gardens different?
We’re pond builders first — not a landscaping company that also does water. Every pond we build is a true low-maintenance ecosystem: an engineered filtration system (a buried AquaBlox intake bay, a constructed gravel wetland, Snorkel® and Centipede® modules) hidden entirely beneath a natural design of stone, water and plants. The result looks like it has always belonged in your yard, and it stays clear on its own instead of fighting you every weekend.
How long have you been building ponds?
Carolina Water Gardens has been designing and building water features across the Carolinas for 6 years, building and maintaining water features throughout the region in that time.
What’s your philosophy on pond and waterfall design?
Nature already knows how to keep water clean — our job is to engineer that into your yard and then hide the engineering. We build naturalistic features that fit the grade and character of your property, with the filtration doing the heavy lifting out of sight. Beautiful on the surface, seriously built underneath.
What areas do you serve?
We build and service water features across the Sandhills and surrounding areas — including Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Pinebluff, Whispering Pines, Seven Lakes, West End, Sanford, and Fayetteville. Not sure if you’re in range? Give us a call at (910) 581-3970 — we’ll let you know.
Do you only install ponds, or do you also maintain and repair them?
Both. We design and build new ponds, waterfalls and fountains, and we also handle seasonal maintenance, cleanouts, and the repair or full renovation of existing ponds — including ponds other companies built. If you inherited a pond that’s more work than joy, we can often turn it around.
What types of water features do you build?
Ecosystem ponds, koi ponds, swim and rec ponds, waterfalls and streams, pondless (disappearing) waterfalls, fountains and bubbling rocks, and full aquascapes. Whether you want a quiet bubbler by the patio or a large koi pond with a waterfall you can hear from the house, it’s the same craftsmanship and the same low-maintenance filtration behind it.
Can you help with the landscape around the water feature?
Yes — the stonework, boulder placement, planting and low-voltage lighting around your feature are part of what makes it look natural, and we handle all of it. We also offer basic landscaping packages to finish out the space around your feature, so the whole area comes together as one.
Who will actually be working on my property?
You work directly with Jon from the first walkthrough through the final fill — this is a hands-on, owner-run business, not a call center that hands you off. Every build is done by our own crew — never subcontracted out — so the people who design your pond are the same people who build it.
Is a UV clarifier included?
No. UV is an optional add-on, quoted separately. It is not cheap to add, and it is not always needed — a well-built ecosystem pond stays clear with circulation, filtration, rock, plants, and fish. We recommend UV only when the pond calls for it.
Do you offer any warranty or long-term support?
Two things stand behind your pond. The equipment we install — pumps, filtration, and any optional add-ons such as UV — carries the manufacturers’ warranties. And our own work: we guarantee your pond against leaks caused by our construction, so if anything we built doesn’t hold water, we make it right. What no one can warranty is nature — animal damage, weather, or a pond that isn’t maintained — but because we service what we build, we’re always a phone call away for that too.
Are you insured?
Yes — Carolina Water Gardens is fully insured, so you and your property are protected from the first day of the build to the last.
